The weight gain supplements industry is a thriving industry. Each year more and more people become health conscious and look for ways to loose fat and build muscle mass.
One of the first places these people look is the weight training supplement aisle. There are literally rows upon rows of weight gain supplements in supermarkets, health food stores, health retailers, health and wellness shops and so forth. These weight conscious people provide a perfect market for these supplement businesses that have become very creative coming out with new products and branding them as some miracle cure for muscle growth, testosterone boosting, fat loss, etc.
But are all these supplements and products really reliable and effective? Most people think so. But in reality, beginning your weight gain program at the supplements store is a HUGE mistake.
The word supplement actually means ‘in addition to’ in the dictionary. This means that supplements should only be taken after you’ve got your weight gain diet in check. Don’t think any supplement will take the place of a solid diet.
So for anyone serious about gaining weight and muscle mass, the first place you should start is to re-examine your diet to make sure that you have a balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins and water.
Once this balanced diet is in place, the body will function better, and digestion and absorption of foods will be more efficient, which implies that growth and development will be more optimal. The weight and muscle you gain will mostly come as a direct result of your diet and exercise.
The balanced diet sets the foundation for all weight gaining and muscle building programs. When this is in place, you can start to add on to you diet with supplements to give your gains an extra kick.
To supplement your balanced diet well for muscle growth and development, it’s important to ensure that the right supplements are chosen to supplement your diet. There are 3 good weight gain supplements I recommend you start of with: Whey protein powder, creatine, and glutamine.
Lets start by talking about high quality whey protein in powder form. By quality, I mean that the protein sources used must come from pure and natural sources and they must also contain all 8 amino acids.
Protein powder is easily consumed when mixed into shakes and drinks. On a weight gain diet it’s recommended you eat 6 meals a day, and it can be hard to get 6 solid food meals especially if you’re busy like most people. Whey protein powder makes it easy and convenient to get your required amount of protein for the day.
Creatine is the next supplement on the list. Our body energy currency is Adenosine-Triphosphate (ATP). When our muscles need energy to contract, ATP is broken down resulting in energy release for contraction.
Hence, the more ATP available in the body system, the more energy will be available for contraction. This means that we can exercise longer and more intensely for greater muscle fiber stimulation.
Creatine is a substance that enables the body to make more ATP. By boosting the level of creatine in the body through supplements, we are actually boosting ATP levels. This will increase the rate of muscle growth and weight gain.
Finally, lets look at glutamine. Glutamine can help speed up the repair and recovery process of muscles after undergoing an intense workout. Exercise will invariably cause damage and break down in our muscle tissues. The faster these damages are repaired, the quicker our muscles will return to growth mode after exercise.
Taking a glutamine supplement will allow for this rapid recovery to take place and also help keep your body out of a catabolic state in which your body breaks down muscle tissue for energy. The best times to take glutamine are first thing after a workout and right before bedtime.
The only other supplement I’d add into this mix is a good multivitamin. Most people ignore this simple supplement but it’s extremely important to keep your body systems functioning properly, especially when you’re doing intense weight training.
Now that you understand the most important weight gain supplements you can put your focus where it belongs: weight training and dieting. The supplements I listed above will give you an extra boost, and most of the other weight gaining supplements out there are a waste of money and will product little to no results for you.
